GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project: „Revalorisation and regeneration of green areas in Polanica-Zdroj including green-blue infrastructure for the needs of adapting the city to climate changes” Project funded within the Program „Environment, Energy and Climate Change. Mitigation of climate change and adaptation to their effects”, from the resources of European Economic Area Financial Mechanism.
The project is co-financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as part of the EEA funds and the state budget by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
Due to the resort character of the town, Polanica-Zdrój must pay particular attention to the condition and prosperity of the environment.
As good examples of creating green and blue infrastructure from around the world are already widely available, our city cannot be left behind, this knowledge must be used!
It has been created a set of projects, ranging from large-scale with is revitalization of the entire Zdrojowy Park to small-scale tasks such as expanding the layered greenery structure, creating a rain garden and flower meadow to improve water retention capabilities, preventing excessive drying of the ground at the playground at Żeromskiego Street or installing rainwater tanks at the EDUKATOR Elementary School.
The Municipal Commune of Polanica-Zdrój came over implementation of the project entitled “Revitalization and revitalization of green areas in Polanica-Zdrój including green-blue infrastructure for adaptation of the city to climate change” in Q4 2021. The project is expected to take for about 2 years.
Before applying for external funds, Polanica-Zdrój commissioned the preparation of the Municipal Adaptation Plan, which was to show the climate forecasts that the city will face in the coming years.
The town is located over the foothills of the Sudety and Bystrzyckie mountain that is why exposition to water runoff from the slopes of the surrounding areas is so big. Not only big cities observe the warming of climate, the Municipal Heat Island also affects Polanica. Along with drought comes degradation of slopes, which are also exposed to soil leaching during the heavy rains. Overflowing sewage manholes are not able to receive the large amount of precipitation that occurs in a short period of time.
The set of projects we have developed will help Polanica-Zdrój become a city more resistant to climate change.
We are aware that nature will become more and more harsh on us.
The city’s adaptation to climate change should be a two-pronged approach. Responsible urban planning combined with increased awareness of city dwellers of how to respond to the problems around us is our future and future of next generations.
